Starting a New Page
August 3rd, 2006 by aklibrarian1I am starting a new blog. This one will look at a year in the life of a Bush Alaskan librarian. I supervise 15 libraries that are in the Bering Strait School District. It is a wonderful job in which every other Monday I pack a bag and travel to a school for a week. During that week, I provide lessons in information literacy, do library maintenence, and work with the library aides to make sure they have the up to date information.

Wow! 12 different schools, how do you keep track of all the needs of so many schools? What happens if you go to a school and can not get out due to weather? I’m looking forward to reading your blog this school year. I bet you will have many wonderful stories about being an Alaskan Bush Librarian.

I’m interested in the ways that you use technology to enhance your library programs. I really enjoyed talking with you both here during the Library Leadership Academy and at ASTE. I have a very “techie” group of teachers, but I feel they aren’t as willing as they could be to share with the less techie teachers. Last year my goal was to provide technology professional development, but it was always the same teachers coming. Any ideas on luring in those reluctant teachers? I think this year I might try one-on-one collaboration as a way to support and encourage the use of technology. What do you think?

So exciting to read your new blog. I had four Iowa school libraries once with an assistant at each and struggled mightily to implement a flexible schedule. When I moved to Nashville, I had two buildings 4.5 miles apart with only a half-time assistant and struggled even more. Please write often.
